A Dereham charity which provides a warm and welcoming place for disabled people and over 55s to meet and share lunch is set to benefit from three years of financial support from a local house builder.

Abel Homes has committed to support Dereham Meeting Point over the next three years,  with the first year’s funding already being put to good use, with the instillation of a replacement boiler at the charity’s premises ensuring everyone stays warm this winter.

The Watton-based firm, which is currently building 216 energy-efficient family homes in the town, made the commitment to the charity as part of its £100,000 fundraising campaign to secure the future of the much-needed service.  It will donate £2,500 each year for the next three years.

“For many older people, and those living with a disability, having somewhere warm and friendly to come during the day, as well as the chance to share a hot and nutritious lunch, is a really vital part of their wellbeing,” said Tony Abel, chairman of Abel Homes.

“Rather than giving a one-off donation, we decided to make a longer-term commitment so that Dereham Meeting Point could know they have that money coming in in the next couple of years as well.”

Dereham Meeting Point was founded in 1986 as a place for the disable and over 55s to meet and socialise.  As well as offering a home-cooked two course lunch every weekday, the charity offers a programme of activities and events, a well-used games room, an attractive garden, and services such as a visiting foot practitioner.
